2022 Downriver League MVP Candidates: Halfway Point

We are just past the halfway point of the 2022 high school football season, and that means it’s time to take a look at our early candidates for the Downriver League MVP. In this first look at the candidates we have a wide range of players.

The Candidates

Dominic Davis- Quarterback: Woodhaven High School

Woodhaven’s senior Quarterback Dominic Davis has only played 12 quarters, however he has made an impact. As the signal caller has passed for 449 yards and 5 touchdowns. Davis also made an impact with his legs as he ran for 559 yards and 7 touchdowns. Then versus the Allen Park Jaguars he also added a 95-yard kickoff return to the house for an additional touchdown. His game on September 23 was his MVP game as he passed for a touchdown, ran for a touchdown, and had a kickoff return for a touchdown. He’s a leader on the field and his play is part of the reason he is up for MVP.

Eddie Light- Quarterback: Carlson High School

The Carlson Marauders’ senior Quarterback Eddie Light is in his second season as the signal caller for the Marauders. On 28 of 51 passing, Light has 437 passing yards and 4 touchdowns. Light has also added two more touchdowns on 161 rushing yards over 40 carries which is good for 4 yards a carry. In the five games this year Light has looked better than he did last season.

Laurent Dounamou- Defensive End: Taylor High School

The Taylor Griffins might have the best defensive player in the league in Dounamou. In five games Dounamou has been double teamed, ran away from and in some cases triple teamed. He is a player that all teams plan for and spotlight to make sure he can’t make a play against him.

Chase Barbosa- Running Back/Outside Linebacker/Safety: Southgate Anderson

Under new head coach Bobby Martin, the move of Chase Barbosa has paid off big time. Barbosa has ran for 416 yards on 84 carries, which is good for 5.1 yards per carry, and 9 touchdowns. He has also added 114 receiving yards on 13 receptions out of the backfield, and he’s added 223 yards on special teams as a return man. Barbosa has also been a key defensive player for Southgate as he has 44 tackles 11 of which are for a loss and 7.5 sacks, 6 of the sacks vs Taylor, he has been the man for Southgate early this season.

Nathan Blaszczak- Middle Linebacker: Woodhaven

In five games for the senior leader on the Defensive side of the ball for the Woodhaven Warriors he has recorded 44 total tackles nine of which have been for a loss, and four of them for sacks. Blaszczak also has a forced fumble and a pass breakup as he leads the way for the Warriors defense.

Ben Przytula- Tight End/ Defensive End: Carlson

Ben Prztula aka “The Beast” is a threat for the Marauders who deserves respect, and that is what teams give him. Only having six catches for 78 yards he gets double covered so the Marauders have started using “The Beast” in the backfield as he has racked up 54 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Przytula has also played a factor on defense as he has racked up 27 tackles and 6 sacks through five games this season. Although the numbers aren’t eye popping he is a key focus for every team coming into play the Marauders.

  1. Chase Barbosa (MVP) is an absolute Beast on both sides of the ball. Amazing athlete and a leader on the field.

If your looking at Downriver stats don’t overlook Sophomore QB Jackson Steel Sage. After the first 6 games he is (unofficial) 69/103, 1007 passing yards, 6TD/4int.
    Rushing 30 for 216 yards 1TD.
