Week 1 Takeaways: West Bloomfield Lakers vs Chippewa Valley Big Reds

The high school football season started with a bang as the West Bloomfield Lakers met the Chippewa Valley Big Reds, and the game didn’t disappoint. West Bloomfield managed to come away with a 22-21 victory in the final seconds of the game.

West Bloomfield

Nance a true dual-threat Quarterback.

West Bloomfield starting Quarterback Reqez Nance was able to do it with both his legs and his arm in the 22-21 victory over Chippewa Valley. He started the game a perfect five for five passing before his first incompletion, but before that Nance was running the option and was able to just take on the defenders head on. If Nance can keep it up this season the Lakers should have no issue staying on the winning path.

14 is the Truth.

For West Bloomfield Elisha Durham wears number 14 and is the top guy for the lakers. Durham showed off his combination of speed and route running add to that the fact that it looks like his connection with Nance is top notch they could form a deadly convention for the Lakers. While Nance looked at other guys throughout the night he always came back to Durham when he needed a big play down field.

Defense can be Your Calling Card

While they did give up 21 points to Chippewa Valley the Lakers defense has the making of being a dominant force. With players like Brandon Davis-Swain, Kari Jackson, and Bryce Rowe to name a few they could be the best unit on the field. However, they need to play within their means. Rowe was getting a little chippy near the end of the game which ended up in a penalty near the endzone that allowed Chippewa Valley to score late in the game. Your front seven had pressure on the Quarterback all day which was a positive so if you can clean up the rough edges like some of the dumb penalties, you’ll be golden.

Chippewa Valley

Quarterback has the Tools, Just Give him Time in the Pocket.

Andrew Schuster has all the tools and he showed them off when he had time in the pocket. It was a tale of two halves for Schuster and the Big Reds as in the first half he needed to use his feet to scramble and make plays that way or hand it off to either Cash Shaw or Caleb Fowlkes. When they came back from the half the offensive line looked more sturdy and was able to hold off the pass rush of West Bloomfield. If they can hold off the pass rush beware of the offensive out put.
