Week 1 Takeaways: Allen Park vs Taylor

Two Downriver League teams met in the heart of Detroit, where Allen Park walked away with a 41-0 victory over a Taylor team that gave them a scare a year ago.

Allen Park

Allen Park Looks Hungry

Last season, the Allen Park Jaguars finished with a 6-5 record and let up over 250 points, which has never happened in the program’s history. In last year’s win over Taylor, they gave up 21 points, which wasn’t going to happen this year. The Jaguars came out flying on defense after Taylor won the coin flip and decided to receive the opening kickoff. The Jaguars would end up scoring on their first two drives, going up 15-0 quickly. At the end of the first half, they were up 35-0, and most would think that they would coast through the second half, but that wasn’t the case as they came out in the second half and, on the first drive of the half, kept their first-team offense out there and scored to make it 41-0 and have a running clock with their second team out on the field. The rest of the league should be put on notice.

Cam Johnson, the Real Deal

The Allen Park Jaguars have a lot of athletes and playmakers on the field, but the one that stands out the most is Senior Cam Johnson. Johnson looks like the lifeblood of the team. In the game, he came up big on defense but even more prominent on offense. On offense, Johnson opened the scoring for the Jaguars with a 34-yard rushing touchdown, and later in the game, he would be on the receiving end of two more scores from Quarterback Braylon Orsette as they connected on a 21-yard score and a 16-yard score, both before half time. If he can stay healthy, he will be a major player on this team.

You Have the Athletes, but do you Know how to use Them?

You can tell that the Taylor Griffins have athletes on the field, but play calling looked a little spotty. Both Denzel Cyr and Anthony Celsi look like they can be great players, but the line and some questionable play-calling led them to run for their lives. Cyr looked like a man-child on offense, and he will give teams’ fits this season if he can get the ball. The big back has speed, and that is a dangerous combination. As for Celsi, he can take off and run or throw it downfield if he can get time. Pound the football so you can open up the passing game, and you could surprise people this season.
