Week 2 Takeaways: Dexter vs Saline

The Saline Hornets met the Dexter Dreadnaughts for the SEC Red title a year ago. This year, however, they are the opener in the league for both teams. Saline avenged their loss as they beat Dexter 41-25.

Dexter Dreadnaughts

Running For Your Life?

The Dexter Dreadnaughts were running for their life in this one as the Saline Hornets were swarming to the Quarterback. Sophomore Quarterback Cooper Arnedt was facing down the front seven of the Hornets all night. It looked like the game plan was for Arnedt to pass the ball, as he had 33 passing attempts, but a majority of those were under pressure. Two of the runs that Arnedt took ended up in the endzone as he ran for a 9-yard and an 18-yard touchdown. If the line can get better, the sky’s the limit for the Sophomore signal caller.

Run Ronny Run

The Junior Running Back Ronny Johnson was a man on a mission. Last year, the Dreadnaughts attacked the Hornets with Running Back Cole Cabana, now at  Michigan, and if the game plan was to pass, they changed that early on and unleashed Johnson. Johnson wanted to make his name known in this rivalry, and he did just that as he rushed for 299 yards on 25 carries, which included a 4-yard touchdown run. He should see more play for the Dreadnaughts, especially if it means keeping their young Quarterback healthy and upright.

Saline Hornets

Not Missing a Beat

Following a tough loss to the Belleville Tigers at the end of last season, the Saline Hornets are on a mission and are 2-0 on the early season. They look like a well-oiled machine and look like they are primed for a deep run. Quarterback CJ Carr once again leads them. However, Carr isn’t the only returning weapon on offense, as they also return Seniors Dylan Mesman and Caid Fox. Sophomore Running Back James Rush is joining them this year, which will give the Hornets a dual attack. Rush made a significant impact in the game as he scored twice, both on the ground, as he had a 15-yard touchdown and a 24-yard touchdown. They will be dangerous if they can balance the offense a little more than having Carr throw it 30+ times a game.

Luck of the Irish

Now in his Senior year, Notre Dame commit CJ Carr has picked up a little bit more with his legs. While he’s mainly known for his arm, which he went 16 for 24 for 327 yards and two touchdowns in this one, Carr also showed off his running ability. While officially, he had six carries for 22 yards and two touchdowns, he ran more than that and had some nice gains that were brought back. “Using my legs is something that I worked on a lot this offseason,” Carr said after the game. Carr mentioned that he could have stayed in the pocket a little more than he did, but that is something that he said they will work on next practice.
