It’s that time of the year we have played three weeks in the High School football season, which means it’s time for our first Downriver League MVP watch list. We have a list of players who have been the best in the league and have made the biggest impact on their teams thus far.
Ben Klos- Allen Park: Quarterback
Ben Klos is the first year starter under center for the Allen Park Jaguars has been amazing for them in the early part of the season. Klos has completed 71% of his passes for 482 yards and five touchdowns. He has commanded a great early season start for a team looking to get back to the top of the standings in the league.
Weston Glei- Allen Park: Wide Receiver
Weston Glei has been Mr. Do-It-All for the Allen Park Jaguars this season. Glei has been the only two-way player for the Jaguars this season in their endeavor to run two full units to try and match what other high schools have done lately. On the offensive side of the ball, he has pulled in nine receptions for 173 yards and three touchdowns so far in the early season. On the defensive side of the ball, he has five tackles and an interception from his defensive back position. Glei has also used his speed in the return game, as he has 132 yards on five kickoff returns this season.
Izaiah Wright- Carlson: Running Back
Our reigning MVP is back on this list and is still only a Junior. Last year, Wright led the way for the Marauders offense with 2129 yards and 31 touchdowns; this year, he hasn’t missed a beat. He has 172 yards and three touchdowns in two games. Wright was forced to miss the week 3 win over Taylor due to an injury. While he missed last week’s game, he shouldn’t have any issues putting up phenomenal numbers the rest of the way.
Joe Krolak- Carlson: Quarterback
The Quarterback of one of the best offenses in the league is back on our list for a second year. While Izaiah Wright is the star of this Carlson team, Joe Krolak is the straw that makes this team go. Through three games this year, Krolak has completed 70% of his passes for 408 yards and two touchdowns. Krolak also isn’t afraid to use his legs to move the ball, as he has 160 yards and six touchdowns on 22 carries.
Jamir King- Lincoln Park: Running Back
The Senior Running Back out of Lincoln Park High School runs angry and has helped the Lincoln Park Railsplitters to their best start since the 2017 season. He has rushed for 281 yards and three touchdowns in only 24 attempts. If King can keep up this pace, he could lead the Railsplitters to their best season since 2015.
Logan Ferrell- Lincoln Park: Linebacker
The leader on defense for the Railsplitters is Logan Ferrell, and he has been an absolute monster on that side of the ball. Ferrell has 32 tackles, a sack, and an interception and has caused a fumble en route to the best start of the season for the Railsplitters in seven years.
Thomas Laskowski- Southgate: Wide Receiver
The speedy Receiver Thomas Laskowski makes our list for his play early in the season. Laskowski has pulled in 10 receptions through three games for 318 yards and five touchdowns. Laskowski has already played two of his three toughest opponents this season and has these numbers, so watch out for what he can do in the back half of the season.
Connor Ensign- Southgate: Two-Way
Connor Ensign has been a special player for the Southgate Titans this year as both a Running Back and a Linebacker. On offense, Ensign has rushed for 296 yards and two touchdowns; however, on defense, he is a different animal as he has 34 tackles in three games and has been a difference-maker on that side of the ball.
Ashton Rooney- Trenton: Running Back
Ashton Rooney has been the whole offense for the Trenton Trojans this season. Rooney has been a workhorse at the Running Back position as he has carried the ball 57 times for 539 yards and four touchdowns on the season and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down any time soon and if Trenton wants to make any noise, it will be off the back of Rooney.
Preston Scheffler- Woodhaven: Quarterback
The Freshman Quarterback sensation out of Woodhaven has caught our eye in his first three games as he has passed for 369 yards and three touchdowns. That is impressive for any Quarterback in their first go as a High School Quarterback, but doing it as a Freshman is even more impressive. Scheffler has already seen two of the toughest teams in the league and has conquered them, so the sky’s the limit for Scheffler for the rest of the season.
