Week 5 Takeaways: Riverview Holds Their Own in a High Scorning Affair Over Rival Flat Rock

Huron League rivals Flat Rock and Riverview met in what will go down as an instant classic. After a 36-34 game a year ago, it was thought that this game would have a lot of hype to live up to, and boy did it. Riverview would run out of Flat Rock with a 52-45 victory. After the game, Riverview Quarterback Lucas Thompson said it best: “It was one of the best games I’ve ever been a part of,” and we detect no lies as this might be a candidate for best game of the year.

Riverview

For 15

Early in this one, Riverview’s heart and soul Ian Adams went down with an injury, but that only gave them more fuel to use in this game. While Adams wouldn’t return in this one, his teammates used his injury as a rallying moment. Before he left the field, Adams called over Nathan Pinkava and said something to him, and while we don’t know what was said, Pinkava went on to have himself a game.

Have Yourself a Day Kid

Senior Nathan Pinkava had a day in this rivalry game. Out of the Wing-T formation that Riverview is so well known for, they use three Running Backs, one of which was the monster that is Pinkava. Before fellow Running Back Ian Adams left the game with an injury, he called Pinkava over to tell him something, and while we don’t know what was said, we can gather it was something along the lines of go crazy. Pinkava would rush for 238 yards and four touchdowns on 16 carries. He would also add two 2-point conversions along with going three of three in receiving for 69 yards and a fifth touchdown on the night.

Now They Can Pass It?

If you don’t know Riverview football, they are best known for their ability to run the football and not so much for their passing game. Coming into this one, they completed all eight passes they had attempted. In the game against Flat Rock, they attempted four passes and completed three of them, all of which were to Nathan Pinkava. Leading the passing attack is Senior Lucas Thompson, who finished the night going three of four for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Flat Rock

Missed Points

On a night that Flat Rock lost, they very easily could have been on the other side of things in this one. They lost this one by a touchdown, and that difference could have been made up by converting on more than two of their seven point-after attempts. Flat Rock would finish the night going one of three by kicking the point after and one of four on the two-point try. They left points on the board that could have helped them come out on top.

Record-Setting Night

While they may have come up just short of winning the game, Wide Receiver Adam Szalay broke the school record for most receiving touchdowns by pulling in the 14th receiving touchdown of his career. After the game, Szalay said that breaking the record was a moment of joy for him.
