Week 8 Takeaways: The Voyageur Cougars Slay the Summit Dragons in a Saturday Night Showdown

We had Saturday Night football as the Summit Academy Dragons traveled to take on the Voyageur College Prep Cougars. While the game was marred by penalties left and right by both teams, the Cougars came out victorious by a final score of 28-9.

Spread Thin

While they have a small team, Junior Quarterback Jacob Boykins was spread thin, and it showed late in the game. Boykins lined up as the Quarterback, a Defensive Back, the Holder, and Wide Receiver. At the Quarterback position, he finished completing three of his twelve passes for under ten yards; however, most of his damage came from running the ball as he rushed for 104 yards on 16 rushing attempts. Boykins also made a big play as a Wide Receiver, pulling in a 20-yard touchdown reception. What makes us think he is being spread so thin is how he looked in this game as opposed to how he looked as the Quarterback at Lincoln Park one year ago. His passes looked cleaner and crisp and he didn’t need to run it much to make a big play.

The Goodwin Express

One of the fastest and best players on the field Saturday was Terrell Goodwin. Goodwin played a role on both sides of the field. On offense, he lined up as Quarterback and Running Back; as Quarterback, he mainly ran the Wildcat formation when he ran the ball 11 times for 78 yards and a touchdown. On the defensive side of the ball, he lined up as a safety and cornerback, where he had an interception late in the first half that prevented a touchdown.

Air Smith

Amare Smith was the main Quarterback for the Cougars in the win over the Dragons. Smith finished the game by completing four of six passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns. While that’s a small sample size, his passes looked nice and crisp. Smith also was able to get out of the pocket and pick up yards on the ground, as he had a touchdown and 46 yards on nine rushing attempts in the win.
