Hoops Takeaways: Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Needs a Late Game Explosion from Trey McKenney to Escape with a Win

In the main game of the day at The D Zone Invitational, number 2 in the state, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, faced off against number 5, Rockford. Orchard Lake won 51-44.

Setting the Tone

Rockford started the game off strong, setting the tone on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. On offense, they showed their scoring prowess as they would go on to have the lead at the half and even heading into the game’s final frame. A big reason they had this lead was holding the top player in the state to 0 points in the first half. What helped on the offensive front was a run midway through the second quarter that led them to the lead to end the first half, and then to start the second half, they scored eight straight, including a big three ball from junior Dylan Cross.

Heating Up

The top player in the state is Trey McKenney, and he started ice cold, going scoreless in the first half. It would be the third quarter when he would come to life, scoring 10 straight points to bring them back in the game. While they were still down entering the fourth, it would be McKenney who would take the lead and help his team come out with the win.
