The Allen Park Jaguars and the Trenton Trojans met in a game that meant more in the Downriver League standings than many thought when the season started. With Allen Park sitting in second place and Trenton in third, we were in for a good old-fashioned showdown. Trenton would have the lead going into halftime, but it would be Allen Park that would turn it on in the second half and run away with the game, winning it by a final of 57-45.
Trenton
Riding the Struggle Bus
The Trenton Trojans rode the struggle bus for the better part of the second half. That was evident in the third quarter, as they were outscored 22 to 4, which gave the Jaguars all they needed. When it came to the fourth quarter, while the rest of the team was still riding the struggle bus, Senior Ashton Rooney tried his hardest to get his team back in the game with a 14-point fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to help them retake the lead.
Allen Park
Starts with the Bigs
Allen Park’s offense starts with their bigs and works their way around, down in the post with the likes of Jack Labiak and Weston Glei. While Labiak didn’t do much on the offensive side of things, he played a great defense and did what he needed to, but his front courtmate Wseton Glei stole the show from him in the game as he was doing a little bit of everything. He was most impressive on the defensive side of the ball, pulling in six rebounds and coming up with four steals and a block in the win.
Don’t Be Afraid to Shoot the Outside J
The Jaguars weren’t afraid to shoot the three-pointer in the game, knocking down six of the eleven three-pointers they attempted. Three of the six came from Brandon Powell, who has been the main scorer for the Jaguars, and he did that again vs. Trenton. Powell dropped a game-high 25 points in the win, and while only nine points came from beyond the arch, it showed he wasn’t afraid to shoot it from outside.
