Hoops Takeaways: Riverview uses their Young Guns to Keep New Boston Huron at Arm’s Length

It was a classic Huron League showdown at Riverview, as the Pirates of Riverview took on the Chiefs of New Boston Huron. The first meeting this season was all Pirates, as they won that meeting by 14. Would it be more of the same, or could the Chiefs find a way to bounce back and take down the top team in the league? While this game would be closer, it was still the Riverview Pirates who would walk away with a 57-54 victory.

New Boston Huron

Chief Walker

The New Boston Huron Chiefs were in this game thanks to Alex Tejeda-Walker’s play. Walker was able to go off for 24 points in the loss, but that isn’t what made him impressive. What made Walker so impressive was that a majority of his points came from the paint, and another thing was how he made some very difficult shots look easy. Some of his shots made him look like an acrobat in mid-air. Walker scored the majority of his points in quarters one, two, and three, where he dropped 22 points. Had he stayed on pace, we were looking at a Chiefs victory.

Riverview

Different Team

From the first time we saw Riverview this season to now, they are a completely different team. The first time we saw Riverview this year, they weren’t very fluid in their motion, but in the win over New Boston Huron, they flowed as a team. One of the main factors in their flow being better is Ian Adams, who has been back for nine games. With Adams on the court, he looks to take more of the ball-handling duties and calms the team down.

Let Him Cook

While the Pirates have star players like Nathan Pinkava, Noah Swearinger, and Ian Adams, they have a player who could soon be a household name. That player is Freshman Blake Uy. Uy showed us a lot in the win, scoring 10 points, but it was his ability to handle the pressure that the Chiefs gave him that made him look like a seasoned pro. His ball-handling skills and ability to take good shots in the game made us think he wasn’t a freshman.
