Hoops Takeaways: Detroit Martin Luther King Takedowns Host Grosse Pointe South in a Low Scoring Thriller

Grosse Pointe South welcomed in Detroit Martin Luther King for the right to move onto the District Final against Grosse Pointe North, who upset Detroit Cass Tech earlier in the night. Would we have a battle for Grosse Pointe in the finals, or would Martin Luther King find a way to make sure at least one Detroit team still had a shot at the District Finals Trophy? It would go down to the wire, but Martin Luther King would pull out the victory 43-39.

All Koop

While Senior Adam Czarnik made some big threes late in the game that allowed the Grosse Pointe South Blue Devils to stay in the game, the play of Sophomore Kooper Richards caught our eye. Richards was the primary ball handler for his team and showed his ability to attack the rim against a tough defense from the Martin Luther King team. The performance that Richards put on against King shows he’s going to be an interesting player to watch over the next two years.

Holding Them Off

While Martin Luther King looked the part of a really good team, they haven’t been able to close out the game the two previous times we’ve seen them. This game looked like it was going to have the same result as the two other times we’ve seen them this year, but they were able to battle back this time. While they had the lead for most of the game, they lost it at one point and needed a late run to come back. Steven Jones and Mareon Knott led that comeback. Jones had five points in the second half, including two late free throws, to help them take the lead. On the other hand, Knott led his team with six points in the fourth quarter and was dominant on the defensive glass, cleaning up on the rebounds.
