Following the conclusion of the Division Three championship game between River Rouge and DeWitt, a game DeWitt won 40-30. We were able to catch up with Mark Uyl following the game. Uyl is the Executive Director of the MHSAA, but he was also there as a parent as he was able to watch his son, Grant help his team to their first title in school history.
Following the game Mark Uyl was nice enough to answer some questions about this past football season, what to expect for the winter season, and talk a little about his son and the rest of the DeWitt team.
Uyl said following the game “Our goal from the start of the year was to get all three seasons started, and finished.” That happened with fall sports ending this past weekend with the football finals. The finals this weekend featured DeWitt which is home to Uyl’s son Grant and he also talked about what it meant to see his son out on the field saying “it’s a really special group of guys, not just about my own kids, but everyone’s kids.” He continued by saying “It was nice to be a dad for a few hour’s, but it was about getting all of these kids to the finish line.”
Finishing up Uyl said that this was unlike any other year in the 98 years of the MHSAA. However, he did say “We got football to finish all be it two months late, and now it’s time to write a unique ending for winter sports.”
