Coming off a state title and an undefeated season DeWitt is lucky they get to return their starting quarterback in Ty Holtz, however that isn’t the only star they return this season as they open at the Big House on Thursday Night. DeWitt will also return three-star wide receiver and Wisconsin commit Tommy McIntosh who will return for his third and final season at DeWitt before venturing to his next chapter with the Wisconsin football team.
After last season was cut short with Covid the DeWitt team was still able to win the State Title over River Rouge to cap off an amazing undefeated season in 2020. So being a three-star athlete, McIntosh said it was great to be recognized with that rating, but those aren’t everything. McIntosh later said, “I just try to be the best person, and football player that I can be,” he later said being a three-star athlete motivates himself because he said it feels like he holds himself on a higher pedestal, but he also holds himself to a higher standard because of it.
Part of the reason for the outstanding season was what McIntosh was able to do in the first 10 games as he totaled 692 yards and 13 touchdowns on 28 receptions. That comes with a great connection with your quarterback, and he has that with DeWitt QB Ty Holtz saying, “It’s an incredible connection we grew up playing together.” McIntosh went as far to say that in 2019 even when Holtz wasn’t the starter, they would still both get together to throw around the football. When he found out Holtz was going to start last season McIntosh said he was excited saying “He (Holtz) had a great year, and I had a good year it all just meshed together, and we were able to see the results on the field.”
Not only is McIntosh a star on offense he is also a big part of the defense and he said playing both sides help him moving and staying locked into the game, “I’m always moving” McIntosh said the only time he’s ever on the sideline is when they are on special teams.
Coming into this season DeWitt will have a giant target on their backs, and with 28 guys coming back that will happen. With the players coming back McIntosh said, “We’re driven, over the last ten years we’ve always been friends so it feels like we are just one big family.” With those 28 returners it gives them a lot of varsity experience. He did go on to say that they will miss the senior class since they were one of the best football classes to ever go through DeWitt. “We have a lot of Juniors who are capable of being very, very good football players so I feel very comfortable with what we have.” With the amount of players DeWitt returns we should see another deep run to the playoffs and that journey will start on Thursday night as they take on Traverse City Central at 7pm as part of the Battle at the Big House.
