Game Recap: New Boston Huron vs Milford

We kicked off the 2022 slate of our Football schedule with the Milford Mavericks traveling to New Boston to take on the Huron Chiefs. The game was closer than the 28-7 score would indicate both teams had new head coaches at the helm along with breaking in new quarterbacks.

For the Chiefs head coach Tom Hoover was returning to the sideline for the first time since 2016, and along with him was Junior Quarterback Christian Copley. For the Mavericks it was longtime assistant Andrew Micovich stepping up to bat, and with him, Runningback turned Quarterback Ryan Allen.

Both teams would start the first quarter slow as each quarterback would turn it over a combined four times in the first. That would be the story of the first quarter as it would end in a 0-0 tie. The first points would come off of a Chiefs turnover that would set the Mavericks up deep in the Chiefs zone and Senior team captain Daniel Sternberg would find paydirt from three yards out with 8:53 left in the first half. Two minutes later after a blocked punt set the Mavericks up inside the five, Max Cremeans would take it in the next play to give them a 14-0 lead and that’s where it would stay to end the half.

The second half would start much the same as Huron couldn’t get anything moving, and with that, it would give the Mavericks the ball and with 9:45 left in the third Quarterback Ryan Allen would handle it himself and scamper in from four yards out to extend the Mavericks lead to 21-0.

The fourth is where it would get interesting as the Mavericks would score again to make it 28-0 on a 43-yard pass from Ryan Allen to Ethan Phipps. The Chiefs would then drive down the field and quarterback Christan Copley would find Ethan Woolery in the endzone to make it 28-7 with 8:34 left in the game. The interesting part would come on the next Chiefs drive. The Chiefs would drive down and a pass interference would be called on the Mavericks in the end zone on a third down would set the Chiefs up at the two or so everyone thought. The referees would then huddle and decide that the ball would be placed at the six. The play clock would not be reset, and a delay of game would be called on the Chiefs to back them up then a sac and an incompletion would take the momentum from the Chiefs and the stadium for the game to end in a 28-7 victory for the Mavericks.

After the game, Mavericks coach Andrew Micovich would talk about his defense saying “They’re hungry,” Micovich would go on to say “We had a great year last year.” Micovich also added that this is something he expected as his team last year allowed just under three touchdowns a game last season and this was building on that. Then Micovich talked about the play of his quarterback saying “We were a little rusty, but for a first start as a varsity quarterback he did a good job.”

Player of the Game

Our first player of the game of the season goes to Milford Quarterback Ryan Allen. Allen went 11/22 for 138 passing yards and a touchdown, he would also add another 47 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. After the game, Allen would talk about his performance saying “I saw we wanted it today, we had some mistakes, but that happens in football.”
