The Taylor High Griffins are looking for their first winning season in school history. Since the merger between Taylor Truman and Taylor Kennedy prior to the 2018 school year, the new Taylor High School is 8 and 35. Head Coach Michael Pitts will look to change the narrative with 11 returning starters, five of which are on the offensive side of the ball and six on the defense.
The offense will be run through Senior Quarterback Anthony Celsi. Celsi was a backup for the Griffins last year, and Coach Pitts said, “When he got in, he made big plays with both his arm and feet,” he would say that they are excited about him. Playing in the backfield with Celsi will be Running Back Denzel Cyr, who ran for 300 yards in a backup role last year. A player who will play a role in all aspects of the game will be Senior MarSean Massenburg. Massenburg is a talented athlete who, on offense, will do a little bit of everything, according to Pitts, while on defense, Massenburg will anchor the secondary.
Pitts did say that there are multiple battles in camp this off-season. Some of the key battles that Pitts is looking at this offseason are on the Offensive Line, at Receiver, and in the defensive backfield at Corner. On the battles, he said, “We have a lot of young guys who’ve been working really hard to start,” according to Pitts, so those spots are up for grabs.
The Griffins open the season at Wayne State against Allen Park on August 25 at 4 pm. The teams’ home opener will take place two weeks later, on September 8, as they welcome in Carlson.
