Cody Britt: MVP

After a week-long fan vote, and over a dozen ballots being sent back via area coaches and media we can finally announce our 2021 Downriver League MVP.

In a race that was separated by five points, your 2021 Downriver League MVP goes to Carlson running back Cody Britt.

During his senior year at Carlson Britt was a tank on the field as he rushed for 1,149 yards and 18 touchdowns on 168 carries that were good for 6.8 yards per carry. Britt also had a touchdown and 102 receiving yards in the regular season. On defense, Britt added two more touchdowns, one on a pick 6, and the other was a fumble recovery for a score. On his Senior season, Britt said “I was thankful for the opportunity to be the main back,” He didn’t take all the spotlight however as he went on to thank his offensive line for opening up running lanes so he could have the type of season that he did.

During his four years at Carlson Britt had to deal with a lot of turnover at the Head Coaching spot as they changed the coach three times in four years. Britt had a different head coach all three years up on varsity. He went from Jack Giarmo as a Sophomore to Dan Kalbfleisch when he was a Junior and finally ended up with Landon Grove as a Senior. Britt went on to say that the changes in the coaches didn’t affect him. Talking specifically about Coach Grove Britt said “Grove set goals for us, and we believed in him.”

Earlier this season when Carlson matched up with Edsel Ford it was a special night for Cody Britt and the rest of the Carlson team as Britt broke a school record by scoring six touchdowns in one game. On that game, Britt said “going into the game my mind was set on getting the win.” He continued by saying “After the game, I knew I had broken or tied the record, but after they told me I broke it I couldn’t explain how I felt knowing my name would be in the record books.” Britt is a leader and anyone that knows him can tell you that.

As Quarterback Eddie Light said “Cody is a very understanding and motivating teammate,” Light went on to say “He’s laid-back, but he always motivates everyone.” Wide Receiver Aidan Bowdler echoed Light but added “He was the guy that kept the team together.” Talking about Britt in the backfield, Light said “It was a luxury to have Cody back there with me.” He went on to say “He was always understanding about things.” Rob MacAleese talked about his character saying “He’s the most humble player you’ll ever meet.”

When asked about his plans for after high school “I’m not one-hundred percent sure yet,” Britt said. He added, “If it’s not something with football I’m looking into being an electrician.”

If this was Britt’s final time on the field it was a great run. He did have a message for everyone who voted for him saying “I appreciate everyone who voted for me,” adding “I can’t thank you all enough.”
