DeWitt Start Title Defense on the Right Note.

Coming off a State Championship last year DeWitt faced high expectations in their first game and they met them all. Led by senior Quarterback Ty Holtz and senior Wide Receiver Tommy McIntosh DeWitt looked to continue their undefeated ways, and they did just that as they beat Traverse City Central by a final of 47-27.

Both teams traded empty first drives but that’s all the emptiness that would be had as DeWitt got on the board with a 36 yard touchdown pass from Ty Holtz to newcomer Bryce Kurncz, that connection would go on to have four total touchdowns and 124 yards on the night, after the game Holtz would say of Kurncz “It really comes down to the trust that we built all summer.” Holtz went on to say of Kurncz “he’s exceeded our expectations.”

Part of the reason that Kurncz was so wide open was due to the fact that Traverse City Central had multiple people on McIntosh. Kurncz said “Having Tommy on the other side drawing defenders away really helped.” He also talked about the trust between himself and Holtz as a reason why they had that big connection on the night.

On the other side of things Traverse City Central opened up their scoring with a 90 yard Kickoff return from Carson Bourdo. That would be the only score for them until quarterback Josh Burnham found the end zone on a QB run from a yard out in the third quarter, Burnham would have two more touchdowns on the night. One in the air to Dante Williams from 30 yards out, and another on the ground from a yard out.

With the new season teams were also able to have student sections back in the stands, something that Holtz said felt normal.

Up Next

Next up for DeWitt (1-0) they will hit the road to take on the Portland Raiders (1-0) on September 2.

Traverse City Central (0-1) will look to get on track as they host Marquette (1-0) that game will also be played on September 2.
