With three weeks left of the high school football season, we have reached our final watch list for our Downriver MVP list. These players are the best of the best in the league, and each one has a chance to win the title of MVP at the end of the season.
Weston Glei- Allen Park
The Senior Wide Receiver stud has quietly put together a phenomenal season for a team not known for their passing ability. Glei has pulled 18 receptions for 343 yards and five touchdowns for the Allen Park Jaguars. Glei has also been the only player to play both sides of the ball this year. In six games this season, he has 12 tackles and an interception from the Cornerback position. Glei is one of the best players in the league, and playing at a high level on both sides of the ball makes him a no-brainer on this list.
Ben Klos- Allen Park
The Junior Quarterback of the Allen Park Jaguars has been phenomenal and has shown that the Jaguars are more than a running team. Through six games this year, Klos has passed for 988 yards and 11 touchdowns while completing 58 of the 106 passes he has attempted. While Klos is a prototypical pocket passer, he is willing to run the ball, picking up 52 yards and a touchdown on 20 rushing attempts. With two of the team’s toughest games still remaining on the schedule for the Jaguars, we will see if the threat of a Quarterback being able to throw will keep them undefeated.
Joe Krolak- Carlson
The Senior Quarterback from the Carlson Marauders was asked to step up when star Running Back Izaiah Wright went down with an injury, and he did just that. With Wright out, Krolak completed 55 of his 80 passes for 820 yards and seven touchdowns. However, he is a true Dual-Threat Quarterback, and when you look at his rushing stats, you’ll see why. He has run the ball 53 times for 582 yards and ten touchdowns on the year so far.
Jamir King- Lincoln Park
The Senior Running Back out of Lincoln Park has put together a great season so far. On the season, King has 635 yards and nine touchdowns on 60 carries. King has played in every game this year and is a big, strong back who is also fast, which is a scary combination. King has helped put Lincoln Park football back on the map, and he has made a statement this year.
Thomas Laskowski- Southgate
So far this season, the Senior receiver out of Southgate has been phenomenal. Laskowski has pulled in 23 receptions for 476 yards and six touchdowns, which is good for around 20 yards per catch. However, that’s not it, as he has also completed a 54-yard passing touchdown to give him seven on the season. Laskowski has also carried the ball twice for 11 yards. Not only has he been a key on offense, but he has also played a role in the return game and on defense, pulling in two interceptions.
Conner Ensign- Southgate
The Senior has been a two-way stud for the Southgate Titans. Ensign has 70 carries for 541 yards and seven touchdowns on the year. He has also pulled in seven receptions for 122 yards. While he has been phenomenal on offense, he has been too valuable on defense for the Titans to get more than 12 carries on offense a week. He is the leader on that defensive unit, totaling 61 tackles through six games this year.
Ashton Rooney- Trenton
For the Trenton Trojans, the Senior Running Back has been the team’s whole offense and is otherworldly. So far this season, Rooney has 980 yards and ten touchdowns. He is 20 yards away from breaking the 1000-yard mark and two touchdowns away from tying his career high. He is also closing in on both the career and single-season rushing record, and with him being the main focus of the Trojan offense, that is something special.
Preston Scheffler- Woodhaven
The Freshman Quarterback of the Woodhaven Warriors caught our eye last year when he was invited to the All-American camp, and he hasn’t disappointed this season. In his first taste of varsity action, he has completed 52% of his passes for 552 yards and five touchdowns. While those numbers are down from the other Quarterbacks on the list, his numbers are just as impressive as he is only a Freshman.
