First Look Defensive Player of the Year Canidates

The Downriver League is home to a bunch of great athletes, and we always do a vote for the MVP of the league, and normally that is with no defensive players. However this year we are starting something new to give a spotlight to some of the hardest hitting players on the team with the new Defensive Player of the Year Award.

Here are the guys you should watch for tonight when you head out to the games.

Reid Picotte- Allen Park

Reed Picotte, a Senior for the Allen Park Jaguars, has quietly put together a good season, playing in only the first half of games for the Jaguars. On defense, Picotte has 46 tackles and four sacks on the year from his Linebacker position. Picotte has been called the best defender in the league by many coaches. When you watch him you’ll also see a fiery energy coming with every play, and that is enough to earn him a spot on this list. With games still against Carlson for the League title and Redford Union, Picotte could come up big for his team down the stretch.

Logan Ferrell- Lincoln Park

The Sophomore Linebacker from Lincoln Park has led the way for his team this season. Leading the way with 65 tackles and three sacks for his squad, Ferrell hasn’t disappointed with multiple games with over ten tackles this season in the first year in his position. With games still against Woodhaven, and Carlson, if Ferrell is at his best to end the season that could give  Lincoln Park some positives headed into next year.

Brock Culpepper- Trenton

Another Sophomore Linebacker makes his way onto the list. This one, however, is from Trenton. Brock Culpepper is near the top of the team with 88 tackles. However, his 56 solo tackles lead the team. He is also near the team lead in Tackles For Loss with nine and is tied for second in sacks. Culpepper has been a disruptor on the defensive side of the ball for Trenton. With a big game still on tap against Chelsea, and rounding out league play with Taylor, triple-digit tackles is very much in reach for the Sophomore.

Teegan Nagy- Carlson

We are starting to catch a trend here with the Sophomore class. Teegan Nagy has been huge for the Marauders defense this season. Nagy has racked up 53 tackles from his defensive back position which leads the team. In that he also has two sacks, an interception, and a blocked punt all of which are good enough to put him in the top three for each category on the Marauders defensive unit. He still has a league title matchup with Allen Park and a game against Lincoln Park to end the season.

Andrew Porter- Southgate

Back to the seniors. Porter has come up big on several occasions for the Titans of Southgate with three interceptions on the season, but two of his biggest have come against Lincoln Park and Woodhaven. Not only does he lead the team in interceptions he leads the team in Tackles with 68 of them. With the Titans currently sitting at 5-2 with games against Edsel Ford and Wyandotte still on the horizon Porter will have an opportunity to show he’s one of the top guys in the league.
