Hockey Takeaways: Allen Park vs Carlson

The Allen Park Jaguars hosted the first round of their annual Thanksgiving Classic on Friday, November 24. In the first round, the Jaguars drew the Carlson Marauders. The Jaguars came out on top by a final of 5-2.

Power Play Goals

We usually break our takeaways down by team; however, this one needs its own part as both teams benefited from the power play in this contest. Four of the seven goals scored came off the power play. Both of Carlson’s goals came with the man advantage, and two of the first three Allen Park goals came with that man advantage. There were 12 penalties in the contest, and the puck found the back of the net four times.

Out Skated

The Marauders came out of the Thanksgiving Holiday a little sluggish from the Thanksgiving Turkey. They looked slower than they did against Woodhaven, and they played back in their zone for a good portion of the game. They were also a man down in the game due to him getting disqualified, and they lost a player due to injury for a bit in the first period. While the injured player was able to return, it was still a rough patch for the Marauders. They got gassed in the second period, and it showed.

Team Effort

The Jaguars got the win in this one via a complete team effort. They pushed the puck down the ice and kept the game in the Marauder zone, but when it did get into their zone, they played a solid team defense, and the goalie, Jack Miller, was able to stop a majority of the shots on goal from the Marauders. The Jaguars also showed off their team speed, which helped them en route to the 5-2 victory.

Brick Wall

Junior goalie Jack Miller made a solid impression on us in the win. Although he let in two goals, Miller showed why he’s one of the best goalies in the state. Miller made some excellent moving stops and did everything with ease. Miller stood tall in net for the Jaguars and looked like a wall. Miller is a name to watch the rest of the season, especially if he can keep the Jaguars in some of the more challenging games.

Hatty

We are two for two this season for hat tricks. Last time, it was Carlson; this time, it was Allen Park who got a hat trick. For the Jaguars, it was senior Logan Jent who had the hat trick. Jent opened the scoring in the second period but scored again in the third period, scoring two goals in less than two minutes. These were his first three points on the season, and if he can be a contributor on the offensive side of the puck, he can make the Jaguars that much more dangerous.
