Hoops Takeaways: Allen Park Inter-City Baptist Beats Rival Allen Park in a Classic Showdown

The Allen Park Jaguars and the Allen Park Inter-City Baptist Chargers met in their annual rivalry game. The Chargers were looking to make it three straight in the rivalry game, and they did just that, coming out of the hard-fought game on top by a final of 68-63.

Can’t Finish

The Jaguars had the lead in each of the first two-quarters of the game and lost it late in each quarter, and they would outscore Inter-City Baptist in the third quarter. While the team couldn’t finish, they had the play of senior Weston Glei, who was able to finish, and he did enough for the Jaguars to win as he scored 21 points and came away with 14 rebounds. While he was able to finish as he attacked the rim at the end of the game when they needed someone to close out the game, they wouldn’t go to him in the final minutes of the game to close it out, and that is what cost them in this one.

Defense Wins Championships

The Chargers’ defense was on full display in this one. They did a good job trapping and attacking the defensive glass as they outrebounded the Jaguars on that side of the ball 21-20. They also forced more steals and had more blocks in the game.

Jackson and Esse Make it Easy

While basketball is a team sport, the Chargers of Inter-City Baptist are powered by Carlos Jackson and Ethan Esse. While Esse dropped a game-high 30 points, Jackson won this game for the Chargers, making it look easy out there. Jackson would dominate on the interior and show off his shot from beyond the three-point line as he would hit four of his seven shots, and while he would score 24 points and be the second leading scorer on the team, his 11 rebounds and two steals would lead the way for his team. With both Esse and Jackson out there for the Chargers, they are a deadly duo.

Searching for 1000

Junior Guard Ethan Esse has his eyes set on 1,000 points, and that should happen in the next few games. After scoring 30 in the win against Allen Park, Esse sits at 899 points. With him averaging 24.75 points a game, that milestone could come on January 7th against the Carlson Marauders at Carlson. Esse has a deadly combination of speed, court vision, and shooting that makes him one of the best guards in the area.
