Allen Park Basketball opened up under a new head coach for the first time since 2009 as they welcomed in the Melvindale Cardinals. Even though it was past Thanksgiving, the Jaguars had a nice helping of bird as they one-upped them 47-28.
Allen Park
New Look Who Dis
The Jaguars looked more conditioned and physical than they have in the last few years, which worked for them. As the Cardinals of Melvindale started to tire, the Jaguars were heating up. New Head Coach Adam Gulick brought what he learned from the college ranks to Allen Park High School, which bodes well for the Jaguars. If they can keep it up, their new physical style can cause problems for opposing teams.
No One Trick
The Jaguars had multiple people to go to in the win over Melvindale. Whether it was Jake Stickler, who finished with 17 points and five rebounds, Labiak, who finished with eight points and five rebounds, or even B Powell, who was a do-it-all star for the Jaguars, finishing with 15 points, four assists, two steals, and a rebound the Jaguars won’t have to rely on just one guy to do it all. That isn’t even counting players like Cam Johnson or Santi Villareal, who had an off-game the first night out.
Melvindale
Star Emerging
Melvindale is building a star in Freshman Bradford Cottrell. While Cottrell only finished with four points, one rebound, and one assist, he was the primary ball handler when he was in the game. Cottrell also showed flashes of what he can be for Melvindale in his first game on varsity. If he can become an assist monster for Rashed Mousa or Davair McCrimon, the team’s offense will flow better.
