Hoops Takeaways: Detroit Renaissance Wins the PSL over Detroit Martin Luther King in a Classic Showdown

The Detroit Public School League Championship was decided at the new Wayne State Fieldhouse as the Phoenix of Detroit Renaissance faced off against the Crusaders of Detroit Martin Luther King. While it was cold and snowy outside, it was nice and hot on the court. The two teams left it all on the court, but Renaissance got the better of Detroit MLK 69-64.

Crisp Passes

All throughout the game, the Crusaders of Detroit Martin Luther King made the right passes. Each pass they made looked like a piece of art. When you normally see a pass in basketball, it doesn’t catch the eye, but each guy on the court knew where the other was going before he made the pass. It was a total display of dominance from the Crusaders in the passing game.

MR. PSL

Before the game, the Detroit Public School League awarded the Mr. PSL award, which is given to the best player who hasn’t won the award previously. That player this year was Detroit Renaissance’s Jordan Sigmon, and he didn’t disappoint in the win. Sigmon finished with 19 points in the win. It was more than just his points as he was flying down the court with and without the ball. He was a game changer, and early in the game, he was a key part of them having the lead.

Stone Cold

Lance Stone is the face of the franchise, and while he’s the face of the team, he might be the best player in the city of Detroit. While the state’s all-time assist leader only had one assist in the win, he showed that he wasn’t afraid to score the ball. At the end of the first half, he only had eight points, but he would explode in the second half to finish the night with 24 points.

Late in the game, Stone had a Golden Globe-worthy performance, drawing a foul that changed the game. What made it a Golden Globe performance, you ask? It was a great flop. While it was called a foul on the court, the replay that was shown in the arena told a different story.

While Stone had that golden performance, he was even better as the emotional leader for his team, as you could tell how much winning the PSL meant to him.
