Hoops Takeaways: East Lansing uses a 17-0 run in the Second Quarter to Win First State Title Since 1958.

The Division One State Final saw Wayne Memorial and East Lansing face off and go toe-to-toe at the Breslin Center, and that might have been the hottest ticket in the state, especially with East Lansing only being 2 miles away. While the first quarter would be all Wayne Memorial, East Lansing would take over in the second quarter as they would go on a Monster 17-0 run in the first six minutes that helped them separate from Wayne Memorial. That 17-0 run would help lead East Lansing to claim their first State Title since 1958 as they would win convincingly  by a final of 66-46.

Wayne Memorial

Different Team

Depending on the game, you’ll see a different side of Wayne Memorial. We have seen them play really good and we have seen them look lost, and in this game we saw both sides of the coin for them. They were solid in the first quarter and did what they needed to win a state title. In the second quarter, it was the opposite as they didn’t score a basket until there was 1:53 left to play in the quarter. It would be that 17-0 that they let East Lansing go on that would be the story of the game, and pair that with being out rebounded by double digits in the game, it was a bad recipe for the Zebras from the second quarter on.

East Lansing

Hometown Kids

The hometown kids of East Lansing High School would enjoy playing so close to home as it was essentially a home game for them. It would be a 17-0 run for them in the second quarter that gave them all the energy they needed on the court. While Kelvin Torbert is the main man for East Lansing, Kingston Thomas and Cameron Hutson led the way for the Trojans of East Lansing. Thomas and Hutson would combine for 39 points and 18 rebounds. Even though Torbert would play a heck of a game, the play of Thomas and Hutson sealed the deal for the hometown heroes of East Lansing.
