Hoops Takeaways: Gabriel Richard Opens Home Slate with a Win over Trenton

The Gabriel Richard basketball team welcomed the Trenton basketball team for what would be their first home game since the playoffs last year and for the few members of the Football team to play at home once again. While the game was hard and physical, the home Gabriel Richard Pioneers came out on top by a final of 69-40.

Physical Play

The Trojans didn’t give the Pioneers an easy game, as you would think by the final score. The Trojans played a hard-fought game that resulted in them handing out 13 fouls. Not only were they physical on defense, but they were also driving straight to the rim on offense and drawing fouls that would send them to the line. Their physical play in the game will bode well for them once they enter league play.

Cold Handed Assassin

The Pioneers had a cold-handed assassin on the court, and that was senior Luke Westerdale. Westerdale, one of the best guards in the area, had a phenomenal shooting night. He hit 10 of his 13 shots and knocked down eight three-pointers. Westerdale finished the night with a game-high 28 points, which comes on the heels of him crossing the 1,000-point mark for his high school career in the team’s game on Saturday night.

1000 Points

While it happened on Saturday night, Seniors Luke Westerdale and Nick Sobush each crossed the 1000-point mark. For Westerdale, he knew about it right away, but Sobush didn’t realize it until the next day. Both players were honored pregame, and they received plaques as the first two players from the school to cross that milestone. With it being so early in the season that they reached this amazing feat, only time will tell where both players end up in the record books for their school.
