Hoops Takeaways: Gabriel Richard Uses a Big Second and Third Quarter to Takedown Arbor Prep

The Arbor Prep Gators traveled to Riverview to take on the Gabriel Richard Pioneers in a game that the Gators wish they could have avoided. While they played a close first quarter, it was all downhill from there as the Pioneers would go on to win by a final of 85-49.

Rough Sledding

Let’s be honest: this one was all Gabriel Richard outside of the first quarter. The best thing we can say for the Gators is they tried. The first quarter was by far the best of the game with the Gators able to get rebounds and were able to limit what the Pioneers were able to do offensively, and it looked like they might make it a game, but all good things have to come to an end as they would give up 31 points in the second quarter and 27 in the third while they would combine for 25 in the second and third quarters combined. The bright spot of the night for the Gators was the play of Zak Byrd-Barry. He finished the night with 21 points in the loss.

Got it Done

The Pioneers played a bad first quarter, and it got better from there. While they had the lead in the game after the first quarter, they didn’t look like the same team that we are accustomed to. Something flipped in between the first and second quarters, and it was like an awakening in the gym. That awakening was Luke Westerdale as he went nuclear in the second quarter, knocking down five three-pointers on the way to a perfect six-for-six night from beyond the line. It would be Nick Sobush coming alive in the second half, scoring 26 in the game and 14 in the second half before coming out. It would be the play of both of them, along with Charles Kage, who added 14 points and five rebounds to give them the victory.
