It was a big-time one vs. two showdown in the Catholic League as the Gabriel Richard Pioneers welcomed the Lumen Christi Titans. Not only are the two teams one and two in the conference, but they are also one and two in their respective divisions. So, needless to say, it was a big game for both schools. The Pioneers would walk away with the big-time win over the Titans 88-65 in the first of what could be three possible meetings this season.
Lumen Christi Titans
Too Deep a Hole
The Titans of Lumen Christi dug themselves a hole that was too big to dig out of in the first quarter. At the end of the first quarter, the Gabriel Richard Pioneers were up 23-11 over the Titans, and while that might not seem like much, the game was out of control already. The Titans weren’t hitting many shots, and they just couldn’t keep up with the pace of play that the Pioneers had throughout the game.
Gabriel Richard Pioneers
Complete Dominance
The Pioneers of Gabriel Richard were in complete control of the game from the start. In the first quarter, they got it going with star Luke Westerdale and big man Drew Everingham. While Westerdale scored eight of the twenty-three points in the first quarter, it was Everingham who gave his team the spark they needed with a put-back dunk, his first of three dunks of the night, and while they led the way in the first quarter, it was senior guard Nick Sobush that would lead his team in the second quarter as he exploded for twelve points and that is when the game fully went the way of the Pioneers.
Sky Full of Stars
The Pioneers have been together for a long time, and while you know the big two of Luke Westerdale and Nick Sobush, they aren’t the only two stars on the team, as they also have two star biggs down low in Drew Everingham and Charles Kage. While Sobush and Westerdale can each drop twenty-plus points a night, their big-man duo is scary in the post, and they showed why vs. Lumen Christi. Kage would be there to pick up the rebound. Everingham put on a show on the offensive side of the ball with three impressive dunks in the game. One came in the first quarter on a missed shot that he was ready to grab the board and slam it back, and the other two came in the third quarter that helped put the exclamation mark on the game as they would lead by twenty-eight points after the third quarter. Westerdale would finish the game with 26 points with four steals and four rebounds, Sobush would tally 23 points to go along with four rebounds, two steals, and two assists, and Kage would add 10 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Then, the one who might have been the biggest star of the night was Everingham with his three dunks, which was only six of his twelve points, and he also added three rebounds, five assists, and a blocked shot in the game.
If all four of them are on, the Pioneers will be a tough team to beat in the playoffs.
