Our first big rivalry showdown of the year took us to Chelsea High School as the Chelsea Bulldogs took on the Saline Hornets. While the Hornets made it close in the end, the Bulldogs came out on top by a final of 59-57.
Sanderson vs Cabana
Two of the top players in the state went toe to toe in this one. Jonathan Sanderson led the way for Saline, dropping 27 points in the loss. Sanderson, a sophomore, is one of the top players in the state, and he’s shown why we’ve seen him in every game this year. Joey Cabana led the way for Chelsea, scoring 30 points in the victory. A Senior this year, Cabana has been on the radar for a few years. However, it was his cousin Cole who had the spotlight last year; this year, it’s all about the 6’3 guard. Last year, Cabana was instrumental in getting his team to the quarterfinal a year ago. The game came down to a Sanderson vs Cabana matchup, with Cabana able to poke the ball away from Sanderson with 10 seconds left to play as Sanderson was looking for a shot to either win the game or send it to overtime.
Stars Shine Bright
The stars came out to play in this one. While we already touched on the main guys on the team, the other stars on the two teams also had an impact. For Chelsea, Jake Stephens helped Cabana the most, scoring 24 and adding 13 rebounds. Of the 24 points Stevens scored, 10 came from the free-throw line. For Saline it was more even as both Tommy Carr and Lincoln Keyes scored nine in the loss. LaDainian Woods added eight points. While Joey Cabana and Jonathan Sanderson were the names on the marquee, they had plenty of help from their teammates.
