Hoops Takeaways: Taylor Edges out Southgate to Advance to the District Semi-Finals

The Taylor Griffins and Southgate Titans met for the third time this year. Southgate was looking to get revenge and send Taylor home early from the state playoffs, while Taylor was looking to make it a clean sweep of the season meeting. Ultimately, it would be Taylor coming away with the 62-60 victory that sets up a rematch with Lincoln Park in the District Semifinals.

Southgate Titans

Three and D

The whole identity of the Southgate Titans is a Three and D player. They took shots from outside the three-point line and played a solid defense. While most of the defense was held back until the second half they shot threes at a high rate. In the game, they finished with seven made three-pointers. When Thomas Laskowski was on the court, he was their deadliest three-point shooter, knocking down four of the seven made threes in the game.

The Want

When you look at how a team plays, they either want it, or they don’t, and you could tell that the Taylor Griffins wanted to keep their season alive just a little more than the Titans of Southgate. The Griffins were playing with high intensity on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. On offense, they were driving to the rim and taking physical shots that were at times a little hard to watch, but on defense, they were diving around to save the ball and make something happen, and that would also transition into the second half where they would also play more man and force mistakes.
