Hoops Takeaways: Wayne Memorial Uses a Big Day from Carlos Medlock Jr to help them Move on to the Semi-Finals

The Zebras of Wayne Memorial met up with the Crusaders of Detroit Martin Luther King for a chance to go to the division one semi-final. One team was picked as a preseason favorite, and the other was not. The favorites in Wayne Memorial would end up coming out on top as they would win it by a final of 70-44.

What got you Here

Even though this is a down team, the Crusaders have used defense to help them get to the quarterfinals, and those stellar defensive games ended just short of the Breslin center. The Zebras just have too many guys that can hurt a team, and they saw that with Carlos Medlock Jr going off for 21, but it wasn’t only Medlock that the defense couldn’t stop as they had issues with Austin Tory and Jaylahn McClellan as they went for a combined 32 points. The defense that Martin Luther King’s team was built on this season fell short, and it cost them a chance at going to the final four.

Early Run

The Zebras put together an early run that helped them ice the game as they would go on a 12-0 run in the first quarter. That run was led by Carlos Medlock Jr, Austin Tory, and Jaylahn McClellan. Tory would be the go-to guy early in the run as he would put down a powerful slam dunk that made a statement and then add a layup down the court next time. After that early run that saw a 12-0 run, it would be Medlock Jr becoming the team’s lockdown scorer in the quarterfinal game. He put together a great showing in the win-or-go-home game, as he scored 21 points. Six of those points were right out of halftime, leading to an early run in the second half for his team to put away the game.
