Micah Davis: From Dreadnaught to Wolverine

The Dexter Dreadnaughts season didn’t end the way they would have liked, but Safety Micah Davis has a new chapter of football ahead of him. In November, before the season ended, Davis had three Preferred Walk-On offers, one from Michigan, one from Michigan State, and one to Eastern Michigan. At that time, Eastern was the favorite with how he talked about the staff and the culture.

However, Davis ended up selecting Michigan. Why Michigan? That comes down to Davis saying that Michigan gives him a better opportunity for his future goals and to become a better football player. From Al Ritt Stadium, where he played high school football, to Michigan Stadium of “The Big House,” where he hopes to one day play, it’s around a 10-mile drive. With it being that close to home, Micah said that there’s a lot of upside to it, but as he said, there could also be a downside, depending on how you handle it. He would say, “You could just go home on the weekends or just be at home all the time,” that’s part of the downside. He also touched on the upside, saying, “It’s a blessing,” he would continue by saying, “I’m going to try and go home enough to see my family because we are close, but not enough that I’m depending on them,” that will suit him well as at Michigan he will be back with his Dexter teammate Cole Cabana.

Going and playing with Cabana at Michigan Davis said it helps. “We’ve been friends since I moved to Dexter in the fifth grade,” he said. “I didn’t get to play with him until last year due to injuries,” that’s all good, but they lack connection on the field. However, they have a friendship that is deeper than just football. Davis did say that it would help his adjustment period to have a friend on the team. One advantage for Davis to having Cabana already on campus is that he was able to see what the spring schedule looked like, so he was ready come summer/fall practice. Not only that but Davis also used it as a time to get prepared mentally and physically.

As a PWO, Davis said Michigan gave him a workout plan for players who weren’t on campus yet to help them when they did get on campus. The relationships with the coaches have been great and key for him since he committed to going to Michigan. Committing to Michigan was a whirlwind as Davis got offered a spot after their win over Saline. Then he took a visit out to Michigan. “I met the coaches and staff,” said Davis. At the same time, he got a tour of the facility and got pictures, but he said he had a great feeling after that visit. Davis took a second visit and said it was a great experience and committed shortly after that second visit.

One thing that Davis kept going back to was his family. He mentioned that for the first visit, he and his mom went. For the second visit, he took his dad and brothers to make sure they had the same good feeling about the school and facility. He would say that the bond he has with his family is important. Going on to talk about how they have helped with the transition saying, “It’s great to have parents who have already gone through the college process,” he would continue by saying, “They helped me in every way possible,” to them he said he’s grateful for all the help they’ve provided. He also talked about his bond with his two brothers, saying, “We are a close family and spend a lot of time together,” some of the time, according to him, is either wrestling around or playing football. Davis did say that his brothers being excited made him more excited for this next chapter of his life.

For Davis, he was injured and didn’t know if he would get an offer. But now heading off to Michigan as a PWO. He said that “It has to be a God thing,” with that attitude and his family behind him, Davis will look to make an impact on the football team at Michigan.
