We are heading into week 9 and that means our people up for MVP have one last week to impress us, and show us why they should walk away as our Bear Sports Network MVP. Next week we will unveil our finalists for the award.
The Candidates
Dominic Davis- Quarterback: Woodhaven
The Quarterback that makes up possibly the most dangerous backfield in the league finds himself here for no other reason than he’s just that dude. Davis has put up a big year so far by completing 62 of his 90 passes for 722 passing yards and 7 touchdowns, but he makes the biggest impact with his legs as he’s rushed for 713 yards and 10 touchdowns. What makes his stats all the more impressive is he’s done all of that in a little over 5 games this season.
Laurent Dounamou- Defensive End: Taylor
He’s been described as the most dominant defensive player in the league. His stats won’t show it because he’s always doubled and tripled-teamed. Team plan around him by running the opposite way. We’ve been told by multiple coaches that he is the best player in the league.
Chase Barbosa- Running Back/Outside Linebacker/Safety: Southgate Anderson
The Junior running back out of Southgate Anderson has had a year for the ages going into his final game against rival Allen Park. Barbosa has put together one of the best seasons we’ve seen in a long time. The move from Quarterback has done him good as he has 835 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on 160 carries. That rivals the numbers that last year’s MVP Cody Britt put up in 9 games. Barbosa has also put up numbers on defense as he’s racked up 62 tackles with 15 of them going for a loss, while also having 7.5 sacks on the season.
Max Biundo- Running Back: Wyandotte
Biundo, the junior, running back out of Wyandotte has been a beast this year like Barbosa. What makes his season all the more impressive is that he has been the biggest bright spot for a team that hasn’t had many. Of Wyandotte’s 16 total touchdowns, Biundo has 10 of them all rushing. He has 869 rushing yards on 125 carries, and he’s also added 22 yards on seven catches. That’s good for 891 total yards of offense to put that in perspective without Biundo Wyandotte would have only 624 yards of offense.
Ty Norgren- Quarterback: Trenton
Ty Norgren is a new addition to our MVP list. Norgren has quietly carried Trenton to an impressive 7-1 record. On the year he completed 25 of his 52 pass attempts for 458 yards and 6 touchdowns. Norgren also does what makes the rest of the league great and that is run the ball. He’s run it 94 times for 702 yards and 9 touchdowns. Week nine will be a matchup against Wyandotte which has a chance to get its first league title since 2015 when they shared the title with Allen Park.
Omari Carter- Running Back: Carlson
Another player that has found his way onto our list late this season. Carter has rushed for 1110 yards on 107 carries and 10 touchdowns. Out of the 8 games, Carlson has played this year Carter has had five 100+ yard games. Carter has also pulled in 5 catches for 53 yards.
Brandon Scheffler- Athlete: Carlson
Brandon Scheffler also makes his first appearance on this list. Scheffler has been a jack of all trades for Carlson this season Scheffler has completed both of the passes he’s attempted for 73 yards. He’s also carried the ball 37 times for 186 and 6 touchdowns, he’s also pulled in 25 balls for 510 yards and two more touchdowns. You look anywhere on the field and you’re sure to find Scheffler.
Devin Henry- Running Back: Woodhaven
If you would have asked at the start of the season Henry would have been the guy that was at the top of the list for this award. Henry’s season has been derailed by injury, but in the four games, he’s played this year you can see flashes of greatness from Henry. He’s rushed for 540 yards and 10 touchdowns, and he’s added another 170 receiving yards in 4 games. Last week vs Southgate, Henry went off for 294 yards and 6 touchdowns which is back to the status quo for the Woodhaven back.
Timmy Simons- Linebacker: Carlson
You may not know the name Timmy Simons, but you will after reading this. Simons has racked up 82 tackles, 10 of which have been for a loss, and 4 sacks from the linebacker position. The DB doesn’t get all the shine he should because of Ben Przytula. While Przytula draws all the attention to the defense he lets Simons take all the stats. To go along with the 82 tackles he also has forced 5 fumbles and has recovered two of them.
Nathan Blaszczak- Linebacker: Woodhaven
The senior leader on defense for the Warriors has put up a great season. As the season comes to a close Blaszczak and the Warriors are looking for another title. Blaszczak has totaled 68 tackles, 12 of them for a loss, and 5 sacks. Blaszczak has also added a forced fumble and has batted down 2 passes on the year.
