Pre-District Takeaways: Riverview uses Late Score to Overtake Trenton

It’s always a good time when Riverview and Trenton meet on the football field, as it’s a tough, hard-fought game, and that wasn’t any different in this one. As quickly as both teams scored to open the game, their defenses both flipped a switch and stood tall for the middle part of the game. It would be that way until the fourth quarter when both teams scored late touchdowns, but Riverview would come out on top as they would go for two after their touchdown with 23 seconds left in the game to give them a 22-21 victory.

Trenton Trojans

Defense

The Trenton Trojans defensive unit stood tall, and played phenomenally in this one, and made some plays that set their offense up to try and score. On Trenton’s defense, Luke Michels recovered two fumbles. Ansel Fater and Zachary Pauli flew around the field, making plays everywhere. Brock Culpepper was preventing Riverview backs from making an explosive run. The defense played tall. Even though a questionable pass interference call allowed Riverview to score the go-ahead touchdown, the defense held their own and kept the Trojans in the game.

Rooney Atack

Ashton Rooney was Trenton’s entire offense all year, and that really didn’t change in this one. While there would be the occasional run by Drew Carson, it was a night of Rooney. The senior runner carried the ball 15 times for 118 yards and two touchdowns. While Rooney is mainly known for his role on offense he played a part on defense as he was flying around and making stops for his team. While this may have been his last game for the Trojans on the gridiron, it’s not the last we heard of him.

Riverview Pirates

A Full House of T

Riverview may officially be the masters of this offense as they keep finding people to run the Full House T offense to perfection, and they did that in this one against Trenton. Riverview threw six passes during the entire game; the rest were runs. Senior Nathan Pinkava led the backfield with 15 carries for 89 yards, a touchdown, and a 2-point conversion. Jordan Smiechowski and Ashton Robinson both also had touchdown runs, with Robinson’s being the longest run of the night for his team.

Master of the Offense.

The Senior Quarterback for the Riverview Pirates stood tall and helped lead his team to victory over the Trenton Trojans. The Quarterback has mastered running the Full House T and has been able to pass the ball this year with some authority. In this game, he completed two of his five passes for 29 yards, ran it 10 times for 64 yards, and even added the game-winning two-point conversion to seal the deal in this one. After the game, when talking about the two-point conversion, Thompson said that Coach Derek McLaughlin asked him if he wanted to be the one to win the game. Thompson’s response was, “Of course, Coach,” with that in mind, Thompson said he saw an opening that he took advantage of to give them a win in the playoffs.
