Regional Playoff Takeaways: Mason vs Trenton

We have officially found our final four in each division. Last Friday, we saw the Mason Bulldogs down the Trenton Trojans 49-30. Here are our takeaways from that game.

Trenton

What a Connection.

We gave the MVP award to Trenton’s Ty Norgren, but on Friday night, you could have made a case that it belongs to Norgren and his favorite target Austin Toth. Toth pulled in 7 receptions for 156 yards and three touchdowns. Norgren only completed four other passes on the night. The QB and WR connection was phenomenal and kept Trenton in the game. After all three touchdowns came in the second quarter, we thought that this connection was going to push Trenton to a semifinal berth.

Toth the way.

Toth was the way for the Trojans squad on Friday. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, Toth pulled in 3 touchdowns for the Trojans on offense, but he wasn’t done as he also added a 62-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. Toth played both sides of the ball and was a difference-maker for the Trojans in this one. Had he pulled in the touchdown right before halftime, Mason had a pass interference on the play, we would have been looking at a possible five-touchdown night and a potential Trojans win.

Mason

Carswell, that ends Well

Mason sophomore starting quarterback Cason Carswell had a monster night in the Mason victory over Trenton. On the night, Carswell was 22 of 28 for 305 yards and six touchdowns. As a freshman, he led this same Mason team to a semifinals berth versus Detroit MLK, and this year is the same. One difference, though, is Carswell looks more polished and more well-rounded this season. He and the rest of the Mason Bulldogs will need to come ready to play if they want to upset the defending state champs.

Badgley steps it up

In the district final, Mason lost their number one WR Colin Page to injury, but it didn’t look like that bothered the Mason offense as Derek Badgley took a huge step up for them, hulling in four of Carswell’s six touchdown passes and compiling 153 receiving yards and another 22 rushing yards. The Carswell to Badgley connection will need to be on point if they want to make it to their first state title game.
