In a game that was close, it never really felt that way. Millington won their first-ever state title over Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central, beating them 24-0 in what was possibly the most shocking thing to come out of the State Final weekend.
Millington
Dominate the game
The Millington Cardinals won this game by dominating both lines and opening up room for the running game. If you look at the game and the time-of-possession battle, you would think that SMCC was in the game, but Millington was physical and owned the game in every phase.
Family Feel
Millington’s first State Title had a family feel to it, as Head Coach Jason Germain and his senior son Landon Germain were able to help lead their team and community to a title. “It’s great to share this moment with him,” Landon said after the game about sharing this moment with his dad. He also went on to say that football is always on his and his dad’s minds, so it’s great to see the hard work pay off.
Burning Bush
Turk Terbush was burning up the field on both sides of the ball as the quarterback but also played a role on defense as a defensive back. From his quarterback position, he completed 7 of his 12 passing attempts for 58 yards and a touchdown. On defense, he had two huge interceptions that helped lead the way and gave him and his offense great field position, allowing them to score once and ice out the game the other time.
SMCC
Untimely fall
Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central picked an untimely time to have their offense and defense both go cold on the same day. What is normally a high-scoring offense didn’t get over 100 yards until late in the fourth quarter; their defense that holds high-scoring teams down didn’t have it today. While it was untimely for them, they got a lot of experience for young guys as they started a lot of young players both ways, so that will give these players a bunch of experience going into next season.
