With week one of the high school football season done we have our takeaways from the first week of the season. This will be a new weekly article breaking down more than the game.

Milford vs New Boston Huron

Our Prep Kickoff Game took us to New Boston Huron where the Chiefs played host to the Milford Mavericks. The Mavericks won the game 28-7.

Milford Looks Like a Team on a Mission.

If you would have seen Milford warming up, at least on the offensive side of the ball, they looked sloppy. However when push came to shove it looked like it was more so nerves that played a part in the pregame.

Next Ty Holtz?

Milford Quarterback Ryan Allen has the same build and same motion as the former DeWitt QB. Allen did say post-game that he’s not trying to be the next Holtz, but the only Ryan Allen.

Huron

Pick a Quarterback and Stick With It.

In the first game under new head Tom Hoover, both Junior Quarterback Christian Copley and Senior Quarterback Gavin Moczydlowsky both saw significant time under center. Copley went 6/19 for 86 yards, two fumbles, and 3 interceptions, however, he did throw for the only touchdown of the night. On the other hand, Moczydlowsky went 4/13 for 39 yards, however, when Moczydlowsky was in he was running the ball going for 50 yards on the ground.

What Type of Offense Are You?

Huron has offensive weapons they can go to in Rory Callahan, Micha Smith, and Ethan Whoolery all of which can be lined up outside if they want to throw the ball. When he was at Allen Park Tom Hoover was heavy with running and his base offense was a Navy. If you want to go back to that you have the perfect person to run the ball in Moczydlowsky. Have all your playmakers on the field.

Allen Park vs Wyandotte

Allen Park faced off against long-time rival Wyandotte at Wayne State. Although the first half was close Allen Park broke out in the second half to win 55-22.

Slow Start or Sign of Things to Come?

Allen Park looked slow out the gate, and that could have been due to the fact the Jaguars weren’t committed to a Quarterback. Coming into the game the Jaguars had a competition between quarterbacks Steven Doyle and Braylon Orsette. Neither QB had many opportunities as the Jaguars passed just six times on the afternoon. Doyle looked more in control of the offense going 2/2 for 62 yards and a touchdown, however, Orsette offered more with his legs.

Running Back Drama?

The Jaguars may have drama in the Running Back room. Owen Alvarez was named the starter, but he may have some competition from Josh Rempert. Rempert showed off his speed on a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Alvarez finished with 32 yards on five carries and Rempert finished with 25 yards on three carries while one of the three went for a 23-yard touchdown. Rempert finished with 136 total yards and Alvarez finished with 48 total yards.

Wyandotte

Your Running Back Will Get You By.

Wyandotte came out with a new weapon in Max Biundo. Biundo came out hot as he carried the ball 19 times for 130 yards, two touchdowns, and a 2-pt conversion. With Biundo running it’s reminiscent of the bruising style of Carlson’s Cody Britt of a year ago minus his breakaway speed.

Get your Playmakers Involved.

Wyandotte has playmakers other than Max Biundo to get involved. Outside of Biundo, they have Wide Receiver Nathan Gonzalez who scored the Bears’ only other touchdown and can cause trouble for teams on the outside.

Bellville vs Novi

The defending D1 state champs from Bellville opened up with a 41-10 victory over conference rival Novi.

They’re Back.

Although they started on a slow note the Bellville Tigers still put up an early lead and didn’t look back. Sophomore Quarterback Bryce Underwood passed for 237 yards and two touchdowns while also adding 40 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The rest of the team also looked good as the defense came up big with a 26-yard interception returned for a touchdown. Bellville is picking up where they left off and it will be dangerous for opponents throughout the season.

Bryce Underwood Moving on up?

Bryce Underwood was one of the best players in the state last year as a freshman, and by all accounts, he’s going to only solidify himself deeper into the conversion this season. As a Quarterback, he’s definitely in the top 5 and will be the future face of the state once Dante Moore(Detroit King), Brady Drogosh(Warren De La Salle), and CJ Carr(Saline) graduate this Spring.

Novi

Hanging in There.

Novi hung in there against a tough Belleville team. Taking the game to half only down 14-3 along with pushing into Belleville’s end on two of their first four drives and having won the time of position battle in the first half all contributed to a slower than normal start for Belleville and a good early rhythm for Novi.

Use Your Playmakers.

One thing that impressed us was the playmakers for Novi. Yes, they lost 41-10 but you could see some bright spots for Novi. Players like Quarterback Luke Aurilia and Running Back Cole Shires both shined for Novi’s offense. Shires also shined on the defensive side of the ball accounting for 9 tackles, an interception, and two pass breakups.

Grosse Pointe South vs Dexter

Grosse Pointe South and Dexter met at Wayne State for their opening game of the season saw Dexter win 41-21.

The Only Way to go is up.

The only way for you to go is up. You have a Quarterback in Senior Anthony Benard and a top Wide Receiver in Senior Ben Domzalski. Now you just need to figure out who your Running Back is and you will be golden. If you can’t settle on a Running Back, pass the ball. Benard to Domzalski will be deadly.

Defense Isn’t as Bad as the Score Looked.

The defense for Grosse Pointe South isn’t as bad as the score would lead you to believe. The defense was flying around making plays early, but they ran out of gas down the stretch.

Dexter

Best Non-Quarterback in the State?

Dexter might be home to the best player in the state that’s a non-quarterback, and that player is Cole Cabana. Cabana went off for 237 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 33 Carrie’s he also added 50 yards and a touchdown on three receptions. Cabana will be tough to tackle in the open space this year.

Watch out Detroit King.

Detroit King will need to watch out as Dexter can match them offensively. With the likes of Cole Cabana(Committed to Michigan), Brennan Parachek(Committed to Michigan State), and Wyatt Novara(Committed to Michigan Baseball) add in Joey Tessmer opposite of Parachek Dexter football will be a fun one to watch. New Quarterback Reeves Taylor will have the pick of the litter to throw it to. Taylor went 17/29 for 243 yards and three touchdowns. Parachek pulled in seven balls for 109 yards then Tessmer added another 76 yards and the only two touchdowns that didn’t go to Cabana. The offense will be high scoring. We just need to see if their defense can hold their own, and that will all come in due time.

River Rouge vs Cedar Springs

River Rouge and Cedar Springs played a low-scoring game up to the third quarter, however with 3:53 left in the third Rouge would score and not look back as Rouge would go on to beat Cedar Springs 22-0.

Keep Pounding the “Power T”

The Cedar Springs Red Hawks ran the “Power T” perfectly, think Riverview, hard to stop, and able to control the clock. Not many teams still run the “Power T” but these guys ran it with ease, and made the right reads. They keep this up and they will make a run.

Pass the Ball?

Maybe more than one pass attempt? But all joking aside if they can get a passing game out of the “Power T” watch out.

River Rouge

Speed and Space.

River Rouge is well rounded, they have the run game, and they have the dangerous targets on the outside. Nick Marsh and Jaylen Watson can pop the top off of the defense, Cameron Broadnax running between the tackles and either Quarterback on the roster have the legs to run it or the arm to pass it.

Quarterback times 2?

Senior Christian Johnson is the starter for River Rouge under center, but they shouldn’t be scared if they have to rely on Sophomore McKale McDowell to step in. After Quarterback Christian Johnson got hurt late in the third McKale McDowell stepped in and helped lead his team to victory. McDowell easily could give Rouge a shot to win the game like he did versus Cedar Springs.
