Michigan is home to a lot of top talent, from Nick Marsh to Dante Moore, from CJ Carr to Bryce Underwood to Brady Drogosh, and even Cole Cabana and Brennan Parachek. But a player who still needs to get his rightful due is Micah Davis. Davis has been an integral part of Dexter’s defense en route to their first 9-0 regular season and their first league title since 1963.
Davis, a Senior at Dexter, is a 6’2, 185 Safety who hits hard. Although his high school career hasn’t gone according to plan due to injuries in his freshman and sophomore years, he did what it took to battle back for his junior and senior seasons. As Davis said, “junior year, I came in a bit timid; I was just trying to figure it all out and get used to the flow.” If you look at the way he plays now, you wouldn’t be able to tell that he was timid, and that is exactly what Davis went on to say, “that paved the way for me to be more aggressive and start to figure things out.”
Not only is Davis a senior this year, but he is also a quick riser, and we even referred to him as the most underrated player in the state of Michigan due to how hard he plays the game. We first noticed Davis during Dexter’s season-opening win over Grosse Pointe South at Wayne State. He kept it up, and then in the team’s week eight win over Saline, and he made a statement. Davis had 12 tackles, including a big hit late in the game, an interception, and a huge pass breakup to help Dexter on the way to an SEC-Red title.
Davis talked about being underrated, and he says it’s due to his team. He said, “I can’t take credit for all the publicity I’ve been getting,” he went on to say, “I have a lot of great teammates that make me look good because they do their jobs.” One of those teammates is Davis’s long-time friend Brennan Parachek. Davis said that he moved to Dexter in the fifth grade, and Parachek and he became close with Davis saying, “He would be the quarterback, and I would play receiver,” and that’s how it was until high school. Once high school came, and Davis had to sit out because of injury, things changed, but that friendship remained. Now both players star on the defensive side of the ball, with Davis playing safety and Parachek playing defensive end. For Davis, having his friend has been a great help as he would say, “If I notice something, I can let him know to let the rest of the line move, or if he sees something, he can let me know so I can tell my guys in the back.”
Not only was Davis underrated to start the season, but you could also say the same for this dexter team. Although they had the names, no one expected this from this team. A lot of milestones this season have led this team to a 9-0 regular season and their first league title since 1963, they beat Chelsea for the first time since 1995, and head coach Phil Jacobs won his 100th game. All of that before the playoffs? How does a team put that all behind them? As Davis said, they enjoyed it all, then moved on to the next. He even went as far as to say, “This might be the best Dexter team ever.” Why is that you might ask? It’s due to the fact that everyone pushes each other, and they all move in the same direction.
Davis also talked about how he’s pushed in practice. Going up the likes of Parachek and Cabana every day isn’t easy, but he said, “They are the best I’m going to see in high school and might be the best I see at the college level.” That might be true, but with walk-on offers to the likes of Michigan, Michigan State, and Eastern Michigan, he could see the best of the best from other states, with all of those being big-time division one programs. Although Micah has yet to pick a school, he did talk heavily about Eastern Michigan, saying, “I love what the coaching staff is building there,” he would continue by saying, “It feels like a big family there.”
We dubbed Micah Davis with the “Most Underrated Player in Michigan” tag. How did he feel about that? Davis said, “I think it’s cool,” saying, “I like being the underrated guy.” The reason he likes it so much, as he said, is because it gives him the feeling of not coming in with as much pressure to perform, but he added, “not having that pressure to perform is allowing me to perform.” Davis would finish by adding he has outstanding teammates and coaches around him that help him do what he’s been able to do this season.
You can check out Micah Davis and the rest of the Dexter Dreadnaughts as they look to continue their magical season Friday, November 4, as they host South Lyon in the District Final at 7 pm.
