Week 1 Takeaways: Detroit MLK vs Cleveland Heights

Our Kickoff Weekend ended with a highly anticipated matchup between Detroit Martin Luther King and Cleveland Heights. King would come out quick but they would cool off in the middle of the game, but they would find it again late in the game to come away with a 25-21 victory.

Cleveland Heights

Quarterback Battle?

If you have more than one quarterback, you have none, and that was the case for Cleveland Heights in this game. They used three different players to take snaps under center. They started with Senior Justin Godbolt II, and they couldn’t get anything going with him, so they turned to Junior Asher Wilson. While he was able to get some offense going, he wasn’t the answer either. When they came back from half, they put in Senior E’mere Atkins. Atkins caught a 75-yard touchdown pass at the end of the first quarter, and then as the leader under center, he would lead them to a comeback in the second half as he would score twice on identical 59-yard runs to give his team a 21-18 lead heading to the fourth quarter. It was the Atkins show, as he would leave everything on the field, but he got banged up and had to come out, and the offense once again stalled under the other Quarterbacks.

Backfield Set

The Backfield for Detroit Martin Luther King should be set in stone for the next two years as they might have the most dynamic backfield in the state with Quarterback Darryl Flemister and Running Back Michael Dukes. However, Dukes was the star back there in this one, as he rushed for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Flemister also showed why he is the next man up at the Quarterback position for King. He did it with his arm and legs as he passed for 224 yards, including a 66-yard pass that led to a Touchdown. He would also score one on the ground. These two in the backfield should be the key to a lot of victories for King over the next two years.
