Week 5 Games of the Week: Previews & Picks Powered by Big Ben’s Comix Oasis

It’s Week 5, and not only do we have two huge rivalry games coming your way this week, but we also have our first homecoming game of the season, as well as a Top 5 matchup in the state, all on tap to add to the fun.

#17 DeWitt vs. Trenton

In the only non-rivalry game of the week, the Trenton Trojans face off against the DeWitt Panthers. This will be the first meeting between the two schools.

Last week, DeWitt took on Lansing Waverly and beat them 58-6. In that win, quarterback Griffin Braman really showed out as he completed 14 of 17 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown. He also added 67 yards and two touchdowns on five carries. Donovan Hillard has had to step up in the absence of Channing Ridley, and last week he did just that as he rushed for two touchdowns and 58 yards on nine carries.

The Trenton Trojans were on the opposite end of their game last week, as there was some controversy surrounding their 21-14 loss to Carlson. In that game, it was the defense that was the bright spot, even in the loss. Junior Tyler Crook recorded 10 tackles and also broke up a pass. However, he might have had the biggest defensive play of the game as he returned a fumble 85 yards for a touchdown. On the offensive side of the ball, it was Parker Saches who had 143 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries.

With both teams showing they can move the ball, who will come out on top? Trenton is coming off a painful loss last week, but they say pressure makes diamonds. Will that loss make them into a diamond this week? For DeWitt, they have been one of the most consistent teams in the state. Will that be the same after a long school day and a nearly two-hour bus ride for the team?

#5 Detroit King vs. #2 Cass Tech — 5 PM Friday

One of the biggest rivalries in the state of Michigan takes place this Friday at 5 PM in downtown Detroit, as No. 2 Detroit Cass Tech hosts No. 5 Detroit King. It’s a game that has been played every year since 1994, and in most years, it’s played twice. In 76 all-time meetings between the two, Detroit King has a 39-37 lead in the series, and even better, both teams enter this one undefeated.

Last week, King played Detroit Henry Ford in a game they won 55-6. In that game, they were able to give their stars a bit of a rest heading into the game against their rivals. Freshman Milo Johnson was their quarterback in the game, and he accounted for three of his team’s touchdowns as he completed 7 of 8 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns. He also added eight carries for 109 yards and a touchdown. Junior Ashton Snorden was on the receiving end of a touchdown and also added a punt return for a score.

For Cass Tech, it was a similar story as they defeated Detroit Mumford 52-0. In that game, it was filled with Don Tabron touchdown passes, as the junior threw for four touchdowns on 5 of 6 passing attempts and 131 yards. Mylan Griggs was on the receiving end of three of those passes as he had two touchdowns and 71 yards in the win. De’Mari Hendrix, Julian Taylor, and Khamari Jones combined for 257 yards and four touchdowns in the ground attack.

It will be a battle of some of the best athletes in the state and a Top 5 matchup, but will letting the stars for Detroit King rest hinder what they can do against their rival, while Cass Tech played all of their guys in the win a week ago?

Lincoln Park vs. Allen Park — Big Ben’s Game of the Week

Our Big Ben’s Game of the Week takes us to the Battle of Champaign, or better known as Allen Park vs. Lincoln Park, and this is also our first Homecoming game of the season. This game has been played 33 times, and it has been played every year since 2009, with Allen Park holding a 22-11 record over their rivals.

The Lincoln Park Railsplitters are coming off back-to-back losses, and their most recent loss was a 34-8 loss to Divine Child last Friday. In that game, the lone touchdown came on a run by Tyler Jones. In total, he had 65 yards on 13 carries. Quarterback Corey Williams completed 6 of his 11 passes for 51 yards, but he also rushed for 59 yards on 13 carries. Zaron Oliver finished the night by pulling in seven catches for 71 yards.

The Jaguars of Allen Park have looked to have righted the ship after an opening-season loss to Trenton, as they enter this game on a three-game winning streak. Last week, they took down Woodhaven 13-12 in a game that went down to the wire. In the game, it was quarterback Easton Danosky who led his team as he passed for 131 yards and two touchdowns on 9 of 16 passing. He also led the team in rushing as he carried the ball seven times for 23 yards. Oscar Moran and Ladonte Brown were on the receiving end of the two touchdown passes by Danosky.

In this one, will the high of Homecoming and the win last week over Woodhaven help Allen Park come out on top, or will Lincoln Park find a way to get back on track following a two-game losing streak?
