Week 6 Game of the Week Previews and Picks Powered by Big Ben’s Comix Oasis

It’s Week 6 already? Doesn’t it just feel like we began not too long ago? Now we are starting to see separation between some teams, while others are still fighting it out as we flip the calendar to October and spooky season. We are giving you a special treat this week as we bring you a double dose of our Game of the Week.

Riverview at Flat Rock

Our rivalry game of the week takes us back to Flat Rock as they host archrival Riverview in a game that will be one for the ages.

Flat Rock is coming off a 28-26 loss to Monroe Jefferson. In that game, quarterback Joel Scully showed off his arm as he passed for 331 yards and four touchdowns on 18 of 26 passes. While Scully showed off his arm, it was David Riddle and Jordan Godfrey who were the top two targets for Flat Rock in the loss. Godfrey pulled in four receptions for 110 yards and a score, while Riddle had 121 yards and a score on six receptions.

Riverview is coming off back-to-back losses. Last week, they lost to New Boston Huron 64-56. In the loss, senior running back Carson Rice had the biggest night as he rushed for 248 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. He also added a 46-yard reception. Brandon Newsome joined Rice in the backfield fun as he carried the ball for 127 yards on seven carries.

It will be a battle of two different types of play. Will the ground-and-pound attack of Riverview lead them to victory, or will the passing attack of Flat Rock lead the way in this rivalry?

North Farmington at Milford — Big Ben’s Friday Game of the Week

It’s Homecoming for the Milford Mavericks, and they will welcome North Farmington for the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Milford enters the game 4-1 and is coming off a 46-10 win last week over Livonia Churchill. That game was the second game back for quarterback Hudson Smith. It looked like Smith shook off whatever rust he had in his first game back as he completed 22 of 28 passes for 257 yards and a touchdown. While Smith was a star in that game, running back Juliano Iljazi also had a big game as he rushed for 201 yards and three touchdowns in the win. When we saw Milford in Week 1, senior Bryce Marszalek impressed us, and he did the same in the win last week as he scored twice. He rushed for one and was also on the receiving end of one as he had 120 yards on 10 receptions.

North Farmington has been one of the biggest surprises thus far, and they shocked even more people last week as they knocked off South Lyon 44-38 in overtime. It was quarterback Eli Cobb who had a game for the ages as he threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns in the win. He also rushed for 81 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries. Cobb also added a two-point conversion and nabbed an interception to help seal the win for his team. Jonathan Majcher and Davell Harrison each also had a score in the game. Our standout player from Week 1, Ryan Jones, also showed that he still has it as he rushed for 62 yards on 15 carries.

These two teams have been two of the more exciting teams in the state through five weeks, and now they meet for a Homecoming affair as both teams are averaging over 40 points per game. Will the two offenses continue to fire on all cylinders, or will this become a defensive affair?

Toledo Central Catholic at Detroit Catholic Central — Big Ben’s Game of the Week Saturday 1 p.m.

It’s the 82nd Boys Bowl, and this year it will be Detroit Catholic Central, one of the original members of the rivalry, taking on Toledo Central Catholic in what will be a big-time border battle.

Catholic Central comes into this matchup at 5-0. Last week, they played and beat Toledo St. John’s 36-3. Quarterback Duke Banta went 11 of 16 for 151 yards and two touchdowns in the win. On the receiving end of both Banta touchdowns was running back Ryan Jaafar. Jaafar also rushed for a score on 16 carries for 99 yards. Sophomore JJ Chevalier rushed for the other two scores. Hey, we went this whole paragraph without mentioning Gideon Gash, but since we mentioned him, he is the guy that opposing defenses key in on and the guy that opposing offenses try to avoid.

Toledo Central Catholic comes into this game at 5-1, and last week they took down one of Michigan’s best in Jackson Lumen Christi 49-7. Leading the way for Central Catholic in the win was Jeremiah Fuller, as he rushed for 219 yards and a career-best five touchdowns on 15 carries. Under center for Central Catholic is sophomore Lincoln Sellers. Sellers completed 8 of 18 passes for 276 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore Robert Douglas III was the receiver who caught the touchdown, which came on a 28-yard pass.

Both teams are entering the meat of the Catholic League; it will now be a battle of nutrition for all the teams in the league. Will it be Michigan or Ohio that comes away with the top spot in the 82nd Boys Bowl?
