Last week’s D1QB Lab Game of the Week took us to River Rouge. As a late change due to construction at Allen Park forced the Jaguars to play on the road yet again.
Allen Park
Held Your Own….Sorta
The Allen Park Jaguars were able to hold their own vs a very talented River Rouge team. Although they were unable to score on River Rouge’s defense, they were able to move the ball with Owen Alvarez. Cam Johnson was also big for the Jaguars, as he was able to intercept two passes.
Hold the Line
The offensive line was able to hold its own. The line was able to open holes for the running game. The line was able to give both Quarterbacks time to pass although neither QB was able to do much with the time given. Both of the Allen Park QBs went a combined 4 for 17 for 13 passing yards. The offensive line has gotten better each week and is quickly becoming one of the better units on the team.
River Rouge
Wide Receiver U?
Yes, we know that the U stands for University. However, the River Rouge Panthers might have the best wide receiver corp in the state. The group is headlined by Michigan State commit Nick Marsh, but he also has senior three-star Jaylen Watson (10 NCAA division 1 offers) who will line up next to Marsh in the slot or on the opposite side of the field. Watson also got injured early and that opened the door for junior wideout Daniel Rucker. Rucker took a step up as a deep threat with Watson out and has now shown that he needs more targets as he pulled in 18 receptions for 259 yards and four touchdowns over six games. Teams will now need to prepare for three options at the wide receiver position.
Quarterbacks Lead the way!
Normally a two-quarterback system doesn’t work, but when Rouge’s starter Christian Johnson went down with an ankle injury that opened the door for sophomore QB McKale Mcdowell. McDowell came in and was able to keep the season afloat. While Johnson was out McDowell went 40/61 for 626 yards and seven touchdowns. With Johnson back this past week McDowell still saw time but it was limited. He went 8/12 for 129 yards, a touchdown, and a 2-pt conversion while also throwing two interceptions. Johnson in the game last week went 6/14 for 100 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Johnson also added 76 yards and a touchdown on 9 carries. Both QBs have strong suits that help keep it fresh. Where Johnson is a game manager and a wise veteran leader for the team. On the other hand, McDowell is a young gun-slinging QB who has a cannon of an arm and can make exciting plays. Rouge is in good hands.
