Our regular season final didn’t disappoint as it saw the win a share of the Downriver League. Here are our takeaways from week nine.
Carlson Marauders
Is Carlson’s Team a Team of Destiny?
Is this a team of destiny for Carlson? The Carlson Marauders have been around since 1963 and they have never won a district title. Most of the team’s success has come since 2006, which is when they made their first district final and lost to Chelsea 48-21. Carlson has the talent and will face off against legendary coach Tom Hoover and the New Boston Huron Chiefs on Friday night in the first round of the playoffs, and a favorable draw until the regional final when they would see Mason.
Talent is Through the Roof
The Marauders have always had talent, but this might be the most complete team. They have a defense that is anchored by Timmy Simons who has played out of his mind this season recording 111 tackles, 26 of them for a loss, 5 sacks, and forced 6 fumbles recovering two of them. On the offensive side, they are led by running back Omari Carter who has rushed for 1374 yards and 11 touchdowns, and athlete Brandon Scheffler who has done it all passing for 73 yards, running for 215 yards, and 6 touchdowns, and pulling in 27 catches for 589 yards and 3 more touchdowns. The Marauders have a full team that and you can’t just key in on one player like you could when they had Jaylan Franklin or Ian Stewart.
Woodhaven Warriors
Was this the End of the Road?
Woodhaven finished 7-2 with a share of the Downriver League, but a first-round matchup with defending D1 State Champs Belleville could spell the end of a good year for the Warriors of Woodhaven. Although Dom Davis, Devin Henry, and Nathan Blaszczak aren’t scared it will be a tough task, the team can rely on what Henry and Davis dub the “Best backfield in the state.”
Woodhaven falling to Earth?
After so long on the top of the food chain in the downriver league is Woodhaven finally coming back to earth? Woodhaven has been the big fish in a pond filled with division 3 teams, but last year they shared the league title with Allen Park and Carlson, and this season they lost out on a share of the league as they lost to both Trenton and Carlson who shared the title this season.
Woodhaven bows out early in the playoffs every year. That’s what happens when you play teams half your school size all year then have to play schools at your own division in the playoffs.
Not Woodhaven’s fault their league is full of small schools. You can’t change your league and that’s why when woodhaven plays good teams like brother rice. Too get a feel for what it’s like to play D1 schools
