Week one Takeaways: Carlson vs Airport

 By: Natalia Terleckyj

Coming into the season’s first game, Gibraltar Carlson has been DRL Champions 2 years in a row. Airport finished last year with a record of 7-3. Airport took the win for the game, making the final score 31-10

Carlson

Gibraltar Carlson not as hungry?

The Carlson Marauders are a team that usually comes out of the locker room ready to win a football game. But in this game, they were not as hungry as they have been in the past. The Marauders struggled to connect on the field and get the ball where they wanted it to go. Carlson could only get one touchdown the whole game, which is unlike the Marauders. Isiah Wright, a returning player for the Marauders coming in this year as a Sophomore Running Back, connected a 63-yard touchdown for the only Marauders score in the 2nd quarter.

Major Wright

Isiah Wright, a backup last year for the Marauders, is coming in clutch for Carlson. Wright had 71 carries, averaging 547 yards with eight touchdowns in the 11 games he played in the 2022 season. Although it was the first game of the season, there are many more games to be played. Isiah Wright finished with six carries for 65 yards and one touchdown against the Airport Jets.

Airport

Airport Jets were flying over the Carlson Marauders!

One thing is for sure the Jets wanted this game more. From the start of the game to the very end, never once did they give up on the way they played. The Jets scored the first touchdown of the game in the first quarter. The team knew where they wanted to get the ball and played like they had been together for years. Airport brought in some key players to help them win this game. Cooper Nye, the senior quarterback for the Jets, brought his arm and his run game. Nye was able to run in a touchdown for the Airport Jets. Jack Mills was highlighted all game for the Jets as he scored three touchdowns.

Jack Mills Cleared for Takeoff

Jack Mills shines out on the field Friday night. Mills was not out there to be out there; he was there to make some plays for the Jets, and boy did he. Jack Mills had 131 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns, eight tackles, 29 receiving yards, and three blocking plays offensively. Mills was not playing around against the Carlson Marauders.
