The West Bloomfield Lakers won their first State Championship in school history as they beat the Davison Cardinals 41-0.
The Lakers were led by Michigan commit Donovan Edwards who rushed for 257 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries. After the game Edwards said that his offense opened holes for him which allowed him to go off. Edwards went on to say “That loss four years ago never left my mind.”
Edwards wasn’t the only one who contributed in the win as Niles King had a strip score for West Bloomfield after the game he said “When we watched film (our linebacker) Jordan Hoskins told me the ball was going to flow my way, and when I saw it coming my thought was to punch it out.”
Being able to have Edwards took a lot as he enrolled early at Michigan, but a waiver from the NCAA and the MHSAA allowed him to stay back, and play. As King put it “Once we knew we were going to have Edwards we weren’t losing.” Head Coach Ron Bellamy echoed King’s sentiments pleading his case for Edwards as the best player in the state.
On the other hand Davison was without Northwestern commit Quarterback Brendan Sullivan, and they also lost Defensive end/Tight end Harrison Unger on an injury two minutes into the game. After the game Head Coach Jake Weingartz said it was a blow to their defensive unit.
