Week 1 Takeaways: Milford Beats Birmingham Seaholm 30-13 at The Big House

The final game of our Big Ben’s Comix Oasis kickoff week saw us head to the biggest stadium in the country as Milford hosted Birmingham Seaholm at Michigan Stadium, a.k.a. The Big House.

In the game, it was Milford who ended up coming away with a 30-13 victory over Seaholm.

Birmingham Seaholm

Hybrid Option

Seaholm ran what could best be described as a hybrid of the triple option with a dash of the Wing-T.

While the Wing-T is a staple of Michigan high school football, that hybrid option? Not so much.

While they have players who look good in that offense, it takes a special team to master what they are trying to do. If Seaholm can get everyone on the same page and consistently execute the offense, it could give opposing defenses some problems.

Milford

Backup Quarterback? No Problem

Normally, if you are without your starting quarterback, that could be a problem, but for Milford, it was no issue at all.

Once starting quarterback Hudson Smith went down with an injury, Milford needed to turn to freshman Bentley Moreno.

Moreno, who just turned 14 in July, looked like a polished quarterback and the type of player who has an X-factor. And boy, does he.

Being young, you would think there would be some sort of learning curve for the freshman, but he handled it all in stride. Moreno finished the game with 273 passing yards and two touchdowns on 12-for-21 passing.

While he did throw an interception in the game, he said Smith was telling him to keep his head up and make the next play.

He did exactly that as he helped lead his team to a touchdown on the next drive.

Moreno will be able to lean on Smith when he returns, but he will also have the rest of his offense around him, including Bryce Marszalek, Zachary Tegler and Joey Beyer, who each had big games in the win.

Bear’s Final Take

Seaholm will need to master the offense they run if they want to make any noise this season. The hybrid style can be difficult to defend when it’s executed properly, but it will take consistency from the entire offense to make it work.

Normally, if you are missing your starting quarterback, you have issues, but it looks like Milford will be able to withstand that injury until Smith gets back.

However, this will be great experience for Moreno as he continues to develop and grow into the future face of Milford football.
